Gold mutual funds track the domestic price of gold as their benchmark. The idea of a gold mutual fund is to not hold physical gold and have direct exposure, but to have an indirect exposure to gold by investing in the gold mutual fund. The mutual fund itself invests in physical gold, stocks of gold companies, actual physical gold, gold ETFs, etc. This means that investors now have an indirect exposure to gold instead of actually buying the physical form of gold.
