Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) is a type of investment vehicle that allows individuals to invest in real estate assets, without actually owning the property outright. REITs are traded on major stock exchanges, and they allow individual investors to invest in real estate without the need for large amounts of capital, management responsibilities, or property ownership. REITs typically own and operate income-producing real estate properties, such as apartment buildings, commercial office buildings, hotels, and shopping centers. Investors can buy shares in a REIT, which represents ownership in the underlying real estate portfolio.
Unlike equity and debt investments, real estate investment is difficult to value. Since REITs are traded the stock exchanges just like equity investments, the valuation is generally taken care of by the demand and supply of that particular REIT in the market.
