National Pension Scheme (NPS) is a voluntary pension scheme offered by the central government. This scheme promotes regular saving during employment of an individual. At retirement, investors can cash out a specific percentage of their corpus as a lumpsum. The remaining will be distributed to them monthly as pension.
There are two types of NPS accounts that can be created. Investors have the option to open both the accounts at the same time. However, a Tier 2 account can only be created after creating a Tier 1 account. A Tier 1 account focuses on building a corpus for retirement with the goal of saving, and limited withdrawing. A Tier 2 account focuses on accessibility of funds with the freedom to regularly withdraw funds from the corpus.
